On the initiative of Venice Urban Lab, the 2024 New European Bauhaus Festival, held in Brussels, arrived as a Satellite Event in the S. Marta district of Venice. “PLACEMAKING IN VENICE - Connecting People to Place” has been an intense and productive day, where 50 people shared ideas, engaged in discussions, and took concrete actions for the future of the Santa Marta area!

With great energy and enthusiasm, residents, students, and young people from other Italian and European cities came together to collaborate, fostering a strong sense of community and driving forward innovative, sustainable initiatives.

Proposals ranged from enhancing green spaces to promoting sustainable mobility and supporting local businesses, many interesting proposals emerged. To improve the livability and vibrancy of the neighborhood, the discussion highlighted the need for effective and direct communication, such as a neighborhood notice board.

Nicola Borgmann's presentation of the "Creating NEBourhood Together" project from Munich sparked discussions on connecting distant initiatives with similar goals, fostering knowledge-sharing between local and global citizen communities.

The entire day was devoted to the community, from morning until late evening, and featured:

  •  Project ideation and development sessions at Hum.us with working groups, a communal lunch, and contributions from other partner organizations of the initiative:

    • Lucia Barocco & Franco Gazzari
Associazione Onlus Lettura Agevolata

    • Renzo de Antonia -
Associazione Culturale Laguna nel Bicchiere

    • Nicola Borgmann – Creating NEBourhoods Together München

    • Emilio Antoniol, Edizioni Anteferma

  • Concrete action for the care of the self-managed garden, from gardening to creating tablecloths for the community!

  • A moment of conviviality with an aperitif at the Afghan Restaurant Carovansarà, accompanied by live music from the Italo-Pakistani group Sorang

We thank all the participants, the design student Iuav Magistrale, all the project partners and the staff of Venice Urban Lab who have actively contributed to the day "Placemaking in Venice - Connecting people to places".

Organized by Venice Urban Lab in collaboration with a network of local associations and organizations including Spazio Hum.us, Carovansara, Sorang, Associazione Culturale Officina Marghera, Associazione onlus Lettura agevolata, Anteferma Edizioni, Laguna nel bicchiere, With the sponsorship of the Order of Landscape Designers and Conservators of Venice and international partners such as Architekturgalerie München, Creating NEBourhoods Together and Bundesstiftung Baukultur.
