Selection Criteria

Consistent with the mission and statutory purposes of the Venice Urban Lab Association, the selection criteria cover.

  1. Relevance to the future of Venice and relevance to contemporary urban challenges
We are looking for theses, both research and design, relevant to the challenges facing the lagoon city, such as overtourism, climate resilience, housing emergency, reconnection with nature, quality, usability and care of public space, unused buildings and spaces, spaces for work, citizen services, etc.
Theses can also cover other cities and places in the world, as long as they address relevant issues, exemplary and significant proposals for Venice as well. This provides insight into situations, strategies, ideas and innovations developed elsewhere that may also be of interest to the Venetian context.

Consistent example: study on overtourism in Barcelona and strategies to mitigate its impact.

Inconsistent example: research on strategies to attract more tourists to a small rural town in France.

  2. Future of Venice as a living and inhabited city
The thesis should be directed even if indirectly toward a vision of a dynamic, living and inhabited city, such as improving neighborhood services, accessibility and enjoyment of historical and cultural heritage, citizen involvement, and development of diversified economies, consistent with the vision of a future city that attracts new generations with qualified job opportunities in a dynamic and inclusive climate.

  3. Language of Thesis
The thesis may be submitted in Italian or English. Thesis in other languages are also accepted, provided that they have already been translated in English. The 200 to 300-character abstract must always be submitted in English too.

  4. Academic Integrity
The thesis must adhere to standards of academic integrity, ensuring that all sources and references are properly cited and attributed, in accordance with international regulations regarding citation and intellectual property.

  5.  Intellectual Property and Copyright
The thesis is the exclusive intellectual property of the author, who must correspond with the person who completed the application form. The thesis must be written and submitted directly by the author himself; it is not possible to complete the application form on behalf of a third party.
In the case of a group work, it is necessary to confirm that all authors agree to the publication. The responsibility for stating the truth lies with the author/authors who filled out the application form.
